Different from many other markets boating offers one of the widest, most diverse product varieties possible. Thanks in part to tiny and highly specialized yards driven by the passion of a visionary owner some rather exotic yachts are being developed every year –many of which don’t fit well with the established categories. This is why the jury of the European Yacht of the Year Award has formed this „mixed-bag“ group where the odd pocket cruiser meets the beautifully built daysailor which in turn goes up against an ourtright racer. So what do we look for? Character, thrill, fun. Or to put it in other words: obscenely pretty, classy and/or fast boats. So expect the unexpected!
The announcement of this year’s winners, will take place during the Flagship-Night on the first evening of the Boot Düsseldorf (19.01.-27.01.2018).
A modern version of a "Wanderlust" cruising dinghy the Aira 22 has been designed to be hugely versatile: You can go places with her, even camp in the cockpit, but you might as well race her. She is the Swiss Army Knife of a small monohull, looking positively pure and fresh while staying affordable at the same time. Dutch designed by Simonis/Voogd the Aira is ideally suited for lakes, canals and inland waterways. Fittingly she comes with a retractable electric stern drive. Available in three versions – ClubSailer, Daysailer, MatchRacer.

This boat is outstanding in many ways. In fact, it may be the most special one that ever entered the European Yacht of the Year. Being a row boat as much as a sail boat, the Lite XP is aimed at the more adventurous types. It can actually sleep two in the rather voluminous front compartment. With a cockpit tent the living area can be much enlarged. An unstayed carbon rigg carries a main and a furling gennaker if there is wind. Otherwise the crew can resort to rowing. With this combination the Manuard-designed Lite XP made it to the finish line of the arduous Race 2 Alaska this summer. Thanks to flotation in the rigg and in the hull the boat can take more than it seems – it passed Category C stability requirements with a crew of three.

The new one by world leading small sailboat manufacturer RS Sailing is not just a boat. The RS 21 is rather a concept. It was conceived having club and league racing in mind. In order to facilitate one design "just-bring-your-crew" formats like the Sailing Champions League hull and deck are designed to be stackable if the keel is removed thus allowing easier transport. The boat also comes with a built-in data logger enabling teams to benchmark virtually against others. Modern hull lines, efficient deck layout, strict one design manufacturing are to provide an affordable fun platform. It is not difficult to see the RS 21 breaking the dominance of the J/70 a bit – which, by the way, won the European Yacht of the Year Award 2013.

Saffier SE 37 Lounge
The Dutch yard's models have been a repeat sight at the EYOTY Seatrials. All but two of Saffier's boats have been nominated in the past 16 years, several have won their category so far. Enter: the new top model! The SE 37 Lounge is by far the biggest yacht of the brand that was built on small daysailors. Despite her size she still is a toy, only a very refined one. With her forward twin helm stations and her lounge-like aft cockpit she is breaking with standards while still setting her own ones in terms of performance, control, and live-aboard comforts. Down below the lack of bulkheads give her a rather airy, utterly cool feel. Build quality is excellent. Consider her a Bentley Continental GT of the seas.
